The tragedy of FireWire

Wonderful story on Ars Technica about the rise and fall of FireWire. This was the port that changed everything for me. I started college shortly after its introduction, and FireWire enabled low cost video ingest directly from camera. Combined with the low cost of Final Cut Pro 1.2.5, digital video enabled my generation to gain editing experience without a $60,000 Avid Media Composer Meridian system. Truly a game changer!

Wow! I had no idea FireWire had such an interesting and somewhat torturous history. As an end user, it’s eye opening to learn the industry’s perspective of developing new technology. How well a product works and how quickly it’s adopted is no guarantee of it’s continued existence.
